Lip Filler

Lips are the center of facial beauty and symbols of youth and attractiveness. However, having genetically thin lips, losing lip volume with age, or having an asymmetrical lip structure affects the self-confidence of many individuals. Lip Filler is the most popular medical aesthetic procedure that adds volume, shapes, and hydrates the lips using hyaluronic acid-based gels.

Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü rejects the “same lips for everyone” approach; he aims for completely natural and aesthetic results that suit the person’s facial proportions without creating a “duck lip” appearance. Lip filler is not just about inflating the lips; it is about contouring the lips, defining the Cupid’s Bow (Eros Bow), and lifting the sagging at the corners of the mouth.

Popular Techniques: Russian Lips vs. Classical Technique

The most common question from our patients is which technique is suitable for them. Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü uses a blend of different techniques according to the anatomy of the lip:

Russian Lips (Russian Technique)

This is the most trending technique of recent years. The goal in this technique is not to project the lip forward (the duck look) but to flip it upwards. The lip flattens and its vertical height increases. It provides excellent results, especially for patients with a long distance between the lip and the nose. When viewed from the profile, the lip looks natural; when viewed from the front, it is prominent and curved.

Classical Technique

This technique aims to increase the natural volume of the lip and provides a homogeneous distribution throughout the entire lip. it is ideal for patients who desire softer transitions.

Frame (Contour) Technique

This creates clearer lines by defining the border between the red and white lines of the lip.

Procedure Comfort and the Assurance of Hyaluronic Acid

The lip is the most sensitive area of the face in terms of nerve endings. For this reason, Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü applies powerful anesthetic creams before the procedure or, if necessary, completely numbs the lip with “block anesthesia” used in dentistry to keep patient comfort at its maximum. Thus, no pain is felt during the procedure.

The fillers used are based on Hyaluronic Acid, which is naturally found in our bodies. The most significant feature of this substance is its water-holding capacity. Even after the filler dissolves, the lips remain more hydrated and vibrant than before. Additionally, in case of an undesirable result, the entire filler can be dissolved within 24 hours using an enzyme called “Hyaluronidase.” This is the greatest safety feature of the procedure.

Recovery Process: Edema and Lumping

It is an expected process for the lips to be more swollen (edematous) than normal for the first 2–3 days after lip filler.

  • First 24 Hours: Hot/cold drinks should be avoided, lips should not be rubbed, and kissing should be avoided.

  • Lumping: There may be hardness or lumps felt by hand in the first few days. These are usually due to edema or can be dispersed with massage. Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü ensures the lip is smooth by performing the necessary massage during follow-up visits.

  • Result: The lip takes its final shape about 1 week later, after the edema has subsided.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will my lips look artificial and ‘duck-like’?

No. Duck lips occur when the wrong technique is used and too much filler (overdose) is applied. When the anatomical boundaries of the lip are respected and the injection is made into the correct layer, the result is extremely natural.

As the lips are a very mobile organ (speaking, eating, facial expressions), fillers dissolve more quickly than in other areas. The average duration is 6-12 months. This period is longer for those who have regular treatments.

No, it won’t sag. On the contrary, because hyaluronic acid improves skin quality, even if the filler completely dissolves, your lips will be in better condition than before the procedure.

Smoking may shorten the lifespan of the filler to some extent, as it increases free radicals in the body and intensifies lip movements (puckering). It is important not to smoke for 4 hours immediately after the procedure to reduce the risk of infection.

For most patients, 1 ml (1 tube) of filler is sufficient for a natural and beautiful change. However, for very thin lips, a second session may be required after one month to achieve the desired volume. It is not advisable to overfill in a single session.
