General Anaesthesia
Concha Bullosa is a condition frequently encountered in the tomographies of patients who consult Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü with complaints of nasal congestion and headaches, yet it remains relatively unknown to the general public.
It is a condition where the Middle Turbinate, which under normal conditions should be a bone as thin as a leaf, inflates like a balloon by filling with air. This anatomical variation can cause chronic sinusitis and persistent headaches by obstructing the narrow channels within the nose.
Concha bullosa is not a disease but a structural feature; however, when it grows in size and begins to press on surrounding tissues, it turns into a pathology that requires surgical correction.
Many people have a concha bullosa that creates no complaints. However, if this air-filled and swollen structure blocks the channels where the sinuses open into the nose (ostiomeatal complex), the following problems arise:
Pressure and Pain Around the Eyes: When the swollen turbinate touches the nasal wall or the septum, it leads to severe “contact point headaches” that can be mistaken for migraines.
Chronic Sinusitis: Because the sinus channels are blocked, the sinuses cannot drain, leading to chronic infection.
Nasal Congestion: The ballooned tissue physically narrows the airway.
It is not possible to shrink an air-filled bone with medication. Therefore, the treatment for symptomatic concha bullosa is surgical. Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü performs this procedure using Endoscopic Sinus Surgery techniques.
The operation is performed by entering through the nostrils without any external incisions. Guided by endoscopic cameras, the ballooned outer (lateral) wall of the middle turbinate is gently removed.
In this way, the turbinate is restored to a thin and elegant state, as it was originally intended. The sinus pathways are opened, and if sinusitis is present, it is cleared during the same session. This procedure can also be safely performed simultaneously with rhinoplasty or septoplasty (bone curvature) surgeries.
Definitive Solution to Sinusitis: Since the main cause of the obstruction is removed, recurring sinusitis attacks come to an end.
Pain-Free Life: Contact headaches are eliminated, increasing the patient’s quality of life.
Rapid Recovery: Because tissue damage is minimal, the recovery process is extremely fast. It generally does not require nasal packing.
It is not a cancerous or life-threatening condition. It only impairs quality of life due to the blockage and infection it causes.
No. Since the ballooned bone wall is surgically removed, there is no chance of the concha bullosa recurring.
If the cause of your headache is the ‘contact point’ seen on the CT scan, you will be completely free of this pain after surgery. However, headaches of neurological origin (such as migraines) may require further evaluation.
When performed on its own, it is a short procedure lasting 20-30 minutes. It is usually combined with other nose surgeries.
Yes, since facial anatomy and bone structure are genetically inherited, if it runs in your family, there is a high probability that you will have it too.
