Lip fillers are excellent for adding volume to the lips; however, if the distance between the lip and the nose is long, applying filler can extend this distance further, leading to a “duck lip” appearance. The space above the lip (Philtrum) lengthens with aging, and the upper lip thins by curling inward.
This condition reduces the visibility of the teeth and makes the face appear older. Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü shortens this distance with Liplift (Lip Lift) surgery, permanently turning the upper lip upward and designing a more youthful, attractive smile that features a “dental show.”
Liplift is not merely a lip augmentation procedure; it is a powerful rejuvenation process that corrects the golden ratio of the face.
The ideal nose-to-lip distance in women is between 12–15 mm. When this distance exceeds 18–20 mm, the upper lip appears long and sagging.
Age-Related Lengthening: With age, the lip tissue loosens and elongates, and the teeth become invisible while speaking (loss of dental show).
Structural Length: Individuals who genetically have a long lip structure despite being young.
Those Who Do Not Want Fillers: Individuals who are tired of getting continuous fillers or who do not like the artificial puffiness that fillers can provide.
Liplift surgery is performed under local anesthesia while the patient is awake and takes approximately 45 minutes.
A piece of skin in the shape of a “bullhorn” is marked at the base of the nose. The amount of skin to be removed is determined through precise measurements.
Excess skin is removed through an incision made at the crease right under the nostrils.
The lower lip skin is pulled upward and sutured to the base of the nose. In this way, the upper lip is lifted, and the pink part (vermillion) turns outward and becomes more prominent.
Since Liplift is a surgical procedure, there is an incision scar. However, Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü hides this incision inside the nostrils and within the natural folds.
Scar: In the first months, the incision site may appear slightly pink. Over time, it fades to skin color and becomes very difficult to notice as it remains within the shadow of the nose.
Edema: There is significant swelling in the upper lip for the first 3–4 days. During this process, the lip may appear excessively lifted or the teeth may seem overly exposed; this is a temporary condition.
Sutures: Sutures are generally removed on the 5th–7th day. Following this, scar care creams are started.
When done correctly, the result is extremely natural. Only the pink part of the lip becomes more visible. There is no forward swelling like with fillers, but rather an upward lift (rotation).
One of the aims of the surgery is for the upper teeth (especially the two front teeth) to be visible by 2-3 mm when speaking and with a slight gap. This is a sign of youth and attractiveness. Millimetric measurements are taken to avoid excessive visibility.
Yes, every incision leaves a scar. However, when stitched using the correct technique and provided the patient does not smoke, the scar at the base of the nose becomes a faint line within 6-12 months. It can be completely concealed with make-up (concealer) after the 10th day.
There is a theoretical risk of minimal widening of the nostrils due to skin tightening. However, Dr Bekir Can Gümüşlü prevents the widening of the nostrils using special techniques such as ‘alar base sutures’.
Yes, a lip lift is a permanent procedure. The removed skin does not grow back. Unlike lip fillers, it does not need to be repeated.
