Chin Augmentation with Prosthesis (Mentoplasty)

The structure most frequently overlooked when discussing the “Golden Ratio” in facial aesthetics, yet the cornerstone of profile balance, is the tip of the chin.

Many patients apply for rhinoplasty (nose surgery) thinking their nose is too large; however, the real issue is often that the chin is receded or small. A receded chin (Micrognathia) makes the nose appear larger than it is and makes the neck look shorter with a more pronounced double chin.

Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü offers Chin Augmentation with Prosthesis (Implant) as a permanent and effective solution to eliminate this facial disproportion. While chin augmentation with fillers is a temporary solution requiring continuous repetition, chin prosthesis surgery is the most important step of “Profiloplasty” (Profile Aesthetics), providing a lifelong, permanent result that integrates with the bone tissue and ensures a natural appearance.

Who Is Chin Augmentation For?

Chin augmentation is performed on patients who do not have bite or jaw closure disorders (whose teeth close normally) but whose chin tip bone structure is aesthetically insufficient.

  • Receded Chin (Retrognathia): If the chin tip remains far behind the lips when viewed from the profile.

  • Small and Pointed Chin: If the lower part of the face looks weak and lacks character.

  • Double Chin Issues: If the double chin skin appears saggy because the chin is receded.

  • Rhinoplasty Patients: It can be performed simultaneously with nose surgery to ensure the complete balance of the face.

Operation Process and Prosthesis Selection

During the pre-operative analysis, Op. Dr. Bekir Can Gümüşlü determines the type (Silicone, Medpor, etc.) and size of the prosthesis best suited to the patient’s facial structure. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia or sedation and takes an average of 45 minutes. The procedure is carried out through an incision of approximately 1 cm under the chin.

Recovery Process and Result

Chin surgery is one of the fastest and most painless facial surgeries in terms of recovery.

  • Nutrition: It is necessary to consume liquid and soft foods for the first 3–4 days and pay attention to oral hygiene (using mouthwash).

  • Edema: There will be some swelling and a feeling of tension at the tip of the chin, which decreases significantly within 1 week.

  • Sensation: Temporary numbness may occur in the lower lip and chin; this passes in a short time as the nerves heal.

  • Result: When the chin extends forward, the face takes a “V” shape, the appearance of the double chin decreases, and the nose becomes more proportional to the face. The patient instantly gains a stronger and more charismatic expression.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the prosthesis visible from the outside or can it be felt by touch?

No. Because the prosthesis is placed under the bone membrane (subperiostal), it appears to be integrated with the bone. It cannot be distinguished from natural bone when viewed from the outside, and it cannot be felt when touched.

Dr Bekir Can Gümüşlü uses techniques involving screws or sutures to secure the prosthesis to the tissues or bone during placement. Once the healing process is complete and a capsule has formed, it is not possible for the prosthesis to shift or displace.

Only for the first few days, there may be slight sensitivity due to swelling and stitches inside the mouth. After recovery, there will be no changes or limitations in speaking, laughing or chewing functions.

The implants used (solid silicone or porous polyethylene) are FDA-approved, fully compatible with the body, and have been used safely in medicine for many years. The risk of allergy or reaction is negligible.

If only a very minor touch-up is required, fillers may be tried. However, fillers dissolve within a year and create ongoing costs. Furthermore, excessive filler can make the jaw appear ‘doughy’ and wide. A prosthesis, on the other hand, provides a bony, defined and permanent contour.
